The Bible says that “the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control.” 

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is Love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things, there is no law.

The Fruit of The Spirit

1: Love;

  1. Romans 5:5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the Love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
  2. 2 Corinthians 6:6 by purity, by knowledge, by long-suffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere Love,
  3. 2 Corinthians 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Love, and the Holy Spirit’s communion be with you all. Amen.

Romans 5:5

5 Now hope does not disappoint because the Love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

When believers come to Christ and receive Him as their Lord and Savior, God pours out His Love into our hearts through The Holy Spirit, who comes to indwell us at the point of salvation, guaranteeing sonship with the Father and making us more like Him in the Spirit and by Love, exhibiting the fruit of Love that dwells in our hearts.

2 Corinthians 6:6

6 by purity, by knowledge, by long-suffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere Love,

The Love of God that indwells us at the point of salvation and lives in our hearts exudes purity and holiness. That Love of the Father and from the Father is genuine and sincere and proves that we are the true sons of God because we have been purified and received that pure Love from God, which now dwells in us by the power of His Spirit, bearing fruits of pure Love for His glory.

2 Corinthians 13:14

14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. Amen.

God loves to commune with His children through His Spirit because He loves all His children unconditionally through the Love of The Holy Spirit. That communion with The Father through His Spirit is by Love, which is pure and sincere and dwells in our hearts forever, guaranteeing sonship to Him and fellowship with Him forever.

2: Joy

  1. Acts 13:52 and the disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. The Word of God says that the Gospel was spreading throughout the region. But amid the spread of the Gospel, the Jews stirred severe persecution, specifically against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory. 51 But they shook off the dust from their feet against them and came to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. God is telling believers not to worry when faced with threats and prosecution for the Gospel’s sake but rejoice and be filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit because we have been counted worthy to suffer for Him and His glory.
  2. Romans 14:17, for the kingdom of God, is not eating and drinking but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Eating and drinking are good things humans do, but they should not be used if they cause or become a stumbling block to someone else faith. Romans 14:22 also says that the law of Love dictates that whatever a believer does and does in faith, without doubt, God deems or considers it righteousness because it has been done from the position and principle of the law of Love. Romans 14:22 Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. So happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats because he does not eat from faith; whatever is not from faith is sin.
  3. Romans 15:13 Now, may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. God desires to fill and indwell His children with joy and peace through the power of the Holy Spirit. Being filled with Joy unspeakable from The Lord is a great blessing any believer should hope for, enjoy and ask Him in prayer at all times.
  4. 1 Thessalonians 1:6 And you became followers of the Lord and us, having received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit,7 so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe. 8 For from you, the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia but also in every place. Your faith in God has gone out, so we do not need to say anything. The Apostle Paul was so pleased by the faith of the Church of Thessalonica that he commended them for their diligence, steadfastness, and resilience, withstanding great affliction, torment, persecution, challenges, and everything that was thrown their way. They overcame all that with great joy to please the master, The Lord Jesus Himself, amidst all that suffering so that the Gospel could go forward without hindrance. Paus was so impressed to learn about their experiences that he found it unnecessary to add nothing else besides encouraging them to continue in Love and labor of Love for the Gospel, awaiting the return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who saves us from the wrath to come.

3: Peace

  1. Acts 9:31, the churches throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in fear of the Lord and the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied. The ease of God that surpasses all understanding is critical when serving the Lord, as evidenced by the example of the early Church. They experienced godly peace as a blessing, which allowed the growth and multiplication of believers and the establishment of various churches in the region and beyond. Therefore, ask God for peace amid calamity, so His work can continue unhindered and so that this Gospel can reach the untold numbers of lost souls worldwide on all continents.
  2. Romans 14:17, for the kingdom of God, is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
  3. Romans 15:13 Now, may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

4: Long-suffering- forbearance Romans 12:9-13

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in Love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people in need. Practice hospitality.

Patience during times of affliction can be challenging as we follow Christ. Still, it is essential to practice, and those who become patient and wait on God in times of trials and tribulations realize they exhibit the fruit of the Spirit and confirm that they are indeed children of God by waiting in prayer as guided by Scripture, praying in all manner of prayers in the Spirit, even as they go through those difficult and miserable times.

5: Kindness 2 Corinthians 6

Marks of the Ministry

6 We then, as workers together with Him, also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2 For He says:

“In an acceptable time, I have heard you,
“And in the day of salvation, I have helped you.”

Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

We take no offense at anything, so our ministry may not be blamed. 4 But we commend ourselves as God’s ministers in everything: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses; 5 in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fasting; 6 by purity, by knowledge, by long-suffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere Love; 7 by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and the left.

When serving the Lord, kindness plays a significant role in demonstrating His Love for our fellow man and enabling the Gospel’s spread to the unreached. Being kind to our enemies is encouraged, as it proves that we are the children of God, who causes rain to fall both on the heathens and His children.

6: Goodness Luke 6:27

Love for Enemies

27 “But to you who are listening, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

God expects us to do good to those who cannot reciprocate. But that does not mean we should become doormats for others, wiping their dirty shoes with our lives. Instead, it means that we are more than willing to give our enemies the benefit of the doubt by exercising patience, endurance, kindness, generosity, and being good to them, even though they do not deserve it. We are choosing to differ from the world’s standard and how the world treats its enemies.

7: Faithfulness 

Romans 3:3 For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect?

1 Corinthians 1:9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Corinthians 4:2 Moreover, it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.

1 Corinthians 4:17 For this reason, I have sent Timothy to you, my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every Church.

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except as common to man. Still, God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

2 Corinthians 1:18 But as God is faithful, our word to you was not Yes and No.

8: Gentleness Galatians 6: 1

Doing Good to All

6 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.

As we serve Christ and live our lives before Him, gentleness will help us overcome bitterness because of the hardships, difficulties, and persecution that we endure daily for the cause of following Christ and being faithful ministers of the Gospel.

Lord, help us be more gentle, just like you. We pray.

9. Self-Control

Galatians 5:23

Gentleness and self–control. Against such things, there is no law.

  1. Proverbs 16:32 Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self–control, than one who takes a city.
  2. Proverbs 25:28 Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self–control.
  3. Acts 24:25 Afraid, Felix said, “That’s enough for now; you may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.” Paul spoke about righteousness, self-control, and impending judgment.
  4. 1 Corinthians 7:5 Do not deprive each other, except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self–control.
  5. Galatians 5:23 gentleness and self–control. Against such things, there is no law.
  6. 1 Timothy 3:2 Now, the overseer, is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self–controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
  7. 2 Timothy 3:3 without Love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self–control, brutal, not lovers of the good,
  8. Titus 1:8 Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, self–controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.
  9. Titus 2:2 Teach older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self–controlled, and sound in faith, Love, and endurance.
  10. Titus 2:5 is to be self–controlled and pure, busy at home, kind, and subject to their husbands so that no one will malign the word of God.
  11. Titus 2:6 Similarly encourages young men to be self–controlled.
  12. Titus 2:12 teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age.
  13. 2 Peter 1:6 and. To knowledge, self–control; and to self–control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness

These nine qualities ultimately aim to enable Christians to live authentic and fulfilling lives according to God’s will. As we grow in faith, we learn to put God first according to His standards. Then, we can overcome and become more like Christ through the Holy Spirit.

The Bible says in Romans chapter from verses 1 to 17:

Romans 8: 1-17

Free from Indwelling Sin

8 There is no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled n us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit if the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now, if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you; the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Sonship Through the Spirit

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, but to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God; these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the Spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption from Him to Whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our Spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

The Bible says that “the Holy Spirit teaches us how to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:21). The Spirit helps Christians break bad habits and sinful thoughts by teaching them how to live according to biblical principles.

1: Pray regularly and seek God’s guidance.

2: Memorize and meditate on Scripture.

3: Spend time in fellowship with other believers.

4: Study God’s Word in depth.

5: Develop an attitude of gratitude for all you have been given.

6: Put on the whole armor of God daily to resist temptation. 

7: Witness and share the gospel with others. 

8: Cultivate a lifestyle of holiness and obedience to God’s commands.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, believers can overcome their sinfulness and live a life pleasing to God.

Believers in God, the Holy Spirit, can overcome their sinfulness and live a life that is pleasing to God. They achieved this through the power of the Holy Spirit, which transforms believers into holier and more humble individuals. In addition, the Holy Spirit helps believers recognize God’s grace and mercy, enabling them to grow spiritually and live a life that honors God.
